Along with the neighbouring resort of Laax, Flims is one of Switzerland's top destinations for snowboarders. Flims and Laax are both well known and popular amongst the Swiss, but it remains a relatively unknown spot for many foreigners, particularly the UK market.
Flims is located about 20km west of Chur, in the canton of Graubünden. The massive plateau of the Flimserstein overlooks the village, and creates a really dramatic landscape. Actually 'village' is not completely correct, because the resort is made up of two mini-villages - Flims Dorf and Flims-Waldhaus.
Both Flims and Laax, and the ski area that they share, have been heavily marketed to a cool, younger customer base, and it's built a great reputation for itself with it slopes and snow-parks, and some of its smart accommodation, especially the world-famous Riders Palace.
It's one of the few Swiss resorts unfortunate enough to have no train station, but its not too far from Chur, approximately 30 minutes by bus or taxi.
Flims is made up of two mini-villages, Flims-Waldhaus and Films Dorf. Flims-Waldhaus contains most of the hotels and is where the area started to grow as a tourist destination back in the 1900s. Slightly north of this lies Flims Dorf, which is home to many of the resorts facilities, including the starting point for the two main ski lifts up into the Alpenarena ski area. Via Nova is the main street that runs from west to east through Flims Dorf, and the tourist office is located here.
