The village of Andermatt is classically Swiss - all chocolate box quaintness and extremely picturesque, surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery. It's located high up in the Alps in the Urseren valley, about 30km south of the southern tip of Lake Luzern. Andermatt nestles in the valley at an altitude of 1444m, with the Gemsstock mountain dominating over the resort and rising up to nearly 3000m on the southern side of the resort.
The village of Andermatt has one main street going through it, the Gotthardstrasse, and this is the home to a host of hotels, cafes, bars, shops and churches along it, many of them fine examples of your classic wooden Swiss-style buildings. At the western end of the Gotthardstrasse is the main Gemsstock cable car, taking skiers up into the main area of slopes, whilst at the other end the Gotthardstrasse meets. the Unteralpreuss river which winds makes its way through the town.
