Crans Montana is one of Switzerland's most famous ski resorts, with a glitzy image and a fantastic sunshine record. Made up of the village of Crans-Sur-Sierre in the west, and the village of Montana in the east, the two have merged almost into one, and have been marketed as such for years.
The resort sits on a sunny ledge facing the Rhone Valley, and when we say sunny we mean it, with a record of bright blue skies which is the envy of its rivals.
Skiing is very suited to intermediates. Mentions Plaine Morte glacier - does it have lifts on it ? In summer, main event is the Big golf championship - the most spectacular setting of any of the European tour events
Crans Montana has a reputation as having some of the best shopping in the whole of Switzerland, which is saying something. With the town's glitzy image, the shopping is something that the area's marketing board is keen to promote, along with the great sunshine record. It's almost 2 km from Crans-sur-Sierre to Montana. Traffic is a big problem, becoming a real nightmare, especially in high season. In Crans the Rue du Prado has big designer names Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Hermes.
Crans Montana very busy - resort clientele very outgoing and a big party scene. You get the impression, as with Gstaad, that people come here to be seen wandering around the hotels and shops almost as much as for being on the slopes. Montana tourist office is located in the post office, 100m west of Vermala funicular station. Village centre is 200m west of here, centred around ice rink. Crans tourist office is on the Rue Centrale.
