The Spengler Cup is an ice hockey tournament that is held each year between Christmas and New Year's Day in the Swiss resort of Davos.
All of the matches are held at the city's Vaillant Arena and the event is hosted by the home team HC Davos. There is no qualification as such for the tournament, with the teams taking part being chosen on an invitational basis.
The tournament is particularly interesting as it often involves a mixture of both club and national teams, and over the years a number of the sport's best known clubs and teams have played in the tournament.
The tournament dates back to 1923 and was the brainchild of Dr. Carl Spengler who used the idea of the tournament as a chance to promote teams from the German-speaking areas of Europe.
The competition is now widely broadcast around Europe and the packed arena shows how popular the tournament has become with the Swiss fans.
The next Spengler Cup at Davos will take place on 26-31 Dec 2017.
